Biblical Missiology

In March, a bunch of us from the Coram Deo community attended the Acts 29 bootcamp in Seattle. For the past month I have been ruminating on what we learned and distilling what might be helpful to others.

For my money, Jeff Vanderstelt's talk on "Biblical Missiology" illuminates the nexus of gospel, mission, and community - and therefore the heart of what Coram Deo is longing to be about - better than anything I have heard this year. I am jealous for all of you to listen to it (you can find it here).

If you desire to dive deeper into the things Walker is currently preaching about - or if you just want to get your fingers around the essence of Coram Deo - please listen to this message.

just listened to the talk and my head is spinning. What wonderful and practical instruction on what it really looks like to bring the redemptive power of the gospel to all areas of life.

His example of how to be a priest in your neighborhood/office/school gave me a great deal of vision for what I want the rest of my life to look like as well as a great deal of sin to repent of: i.e., my inability to engage with people that aren't like me, my fear of rejection, and my failure to really believe that the gospel has the power to redeem the hardest of hearts and the most broken situations- just to name a few.

I was also really struck by his a vision for planting new churches in his neighborhood and workplace rather than just getting those people to show up at the closest Acts 29 church.

Thanks for sharing this Bob.

Sweet, Clatty. If all of us can start thinking about how to be priests in our neighborhoods and schools and workplaces, we will be further down the road in bringing redemption to our city and culture in the way Jesus desires. I did think Jeff's practical examples gave a ton of things to think about in my own context. Get the word out and get some other people listening.

I liked it as well. It seems like God must really want me to start thinking about living missionally in my neighborhood after this mp3 and prayer night and a bunch of other weird things happening in my life. Two questions about the Acts 29 idea of church planting:
1.) Is everyone really qualified to plant a church? I understand that everyone is gifted by God and it should be our goal to take the responsibility and live as priests, but is everyone actually gifted to plant a church?
2.) Why don't we focus on redeeming Christians and redeeming other churches? Instead of planting new churches, why don't we seek to bring redemption through Christ to those in our workplace and neighborhoods to bring redemption to their church homes. If our vision really works and we plant a bunch of churches we will be taking from other churches and they will die. That might not be a bad thing, but wouldn't it be more edifying to the body to redeem other churches?
I in now way am against this way of thinking or think it is wrong, I just wanted to know what some others thought concerning these questions.
