Quotes to Make You Think

"We are not justified by faith by believing in justification by faith; we are justified by faith by believing in the gospel... in Jesus as the crucified and risen Lord of the world."

- NT Wright

"The issue of faith is not believing the gospel when nothing makes sense; it's believing that the gospel makes sense of things."

- Walker

Word, great quotes!

Will's quote reminds me that I often don't really believe in the power of the gospel. I tend to think it's something I have to cling to intelectually during hard times, but I don't try to think through how the gospel makes sense of those hard times. Hard times have way more value when you see how the gospel can make sense of them, rather than simply putting your shoulder down and pushing through them.

When we say, "believing the gospel makes sense of things." What does that mean practically? Does it mean you look at things in view of creation-fall-redemption? Does it mean that I view my job of teaching kids as a job that is broken and my job is to trust in Christ to redeem it through my work as salt and light? I think, like Travis said, that it is an easy intellectual concept but difficult practical application. Thoughts?

Andy,

Yep, that's part of it.

The power of a good quote is that it keeps working on you. Just when you think you get it, you discover another nuance that you hadn't pondered before. So I would hate to answer your question, because it would resolve some tension and keep the quote from working on you. :)
