Lenten Sickness

I started eating healthy for Lent ... and got sick. I knew ice cream was good for me!

I'll resume posting tomorrow. As we go forward, I think it would be cool if you guys share what you are learning/experiencing during Lent. You can post your thougts in the comments section. It doesn't have to be earth-shaterring, just a way of processing Lent together.

What makes doing good (or giving up bad) okay and not a functional saviour?

Is is that you are NOT looking to the good works (and lack of bad works) to save you?

And you ARE looking to the good works (and lack of bad works) as a way to: please God, express love to God, keep a clear conscience before God, to be more effectively used by God, so that unbelievers might come to Christ by observing our lives, to recieve blessings from God, to avoid God's displeasure, to avoid God's discipline, to seek greater heavenly reward, to gain a deeper walk with God, the desire for peace and joy in our lives....?

My Lent sacrifice this year is the same as last years. And already, I have failed more this year than I did last year combined. Ironically enough, I have benefited more this year from Lent. I have to ask myself why?
Here is what I have come up with to this point. First of all, I feel like my heart and spirit is in a better place and I have developed a better understanding of the gospel. Secondly, last year it was all about whether or not I could give up this almighty sacrifice (television). It was more about me and less about Christ.
This year's experience has brought about a new outlook on Lent. It is not about whether or not I am able to suffer more than other people around me. It is not about whether or not my sacrifice is cool and going to make people think I am a sweet Christian. This Lenten season has been more about realizing that I cannot compare the suffering of my 40 days to what Jesus suffered on the cross. I have stopped comparing and competing with Jesus. This season is all about giving Jesus Christ the Glory and finding joy in that.

" I have stopped comparing and competing with Jesus."

That is a quite a statement. I'm guessing that most people would never see themselves as comparing or competing with Jesus, but there it is at the root of our desires to be good enough. Yikes.

Lent was all new to me...so I didn't do it. Now can lent only be practiced during this time? Do you go back to the habit after the 40 days? I am sorry I am completly out of the loop with this, maybe because I use to think that Lent was a Catholic thing. And if the point of lent is to sacrafice then shouldn't that be 365 days? I want to be convinced.
