Peet’s marketing email sucked me in last week. They were roasting a special reserve batch of coffee beans from Burundi. The steps in my mind went like this:
- “Hey, I know people from there!”
- “In fact, our church is full of people from Burundi.”
- “I didn’t know they grew coffee there.”
- “I wonder if it’s good coffee.”
- “I should order some.”
- “Where is my wallet?”
So here I am, enjoying a delicious cup of African bean from one of the world’s finest coffee establishments. My wife says that the Burundi roast “tastes like dirt, with a maple finish.” But then again, my wife ruins her coffee by putting Coffee-Mate in it. My opinion: it does have a pleasant, robust earthiness to it. Maybe that’s what she meant.
And to think, I almost gave up coffee for Lent.

As I was enjoying a steaming cup of Peet’s Espresso Forte blend and reading a chapter from Lovelace’s book Renewal as a Way of Life this morning, I realized that it would really be great for our community to be sharing with each other what we are learning about renewal.
Is there a particular aspect of renewal that you’ve sensed God really challenging you about? Is there an aspect of discipleship or Sabbath (the two subjects we’ve covered so far) that has provoked thought, repentance, and change? Is there anything you’re reading that’s helping to renew your sense of spiritual joy and life?
Post away. Discipleship is communal, so let’s help each other learn and process.

J Zoe Hooley,
Generous friend of Coram Deo,
We extol thee for thy gracious gift of Peet’s Coffee.
From Chicago to Omaha
Thou didst bring the delicious bean
Knowing our fond affection for its delicate goodness.
As the scent rises to our nostrils
As our throats savor the robust brew
We delight in thy selfless act of kindness.
May the favor of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ rest upon thee,
And may he ensure thy future welcome into the fellowship of coffee lovers above.

The coffee snobbery at the Coram Deo offices has reached new heights today with the arrival of our first shipment of Peet’s coffee, air-mailed from the West Coast. (Unfortunately Peet’s does not deem Omaha worthy of its own store, despite the frigid temperatures that clearly increase coffee consumption.) Notice that this delectable bag of goodness has the date of its roasting printed on the bag, ensuring its freshness and flavor. The kingdom of God must go forward, and its progress cannot be hindered by inferior bean!

Can you have church without good coffee? I don’t think so. Could it be that God wanted a coffee shop in Denver to go out of business so Coram Deo could brew good coffee? Hmm… maybe. Of course, it might not have been God’s fault; maybe they just didn’t know how to run a coffee shop. Anyway, thanks to some sleuthing by JD and Todd, the Lord provided some top-of-the-line coffee equipment this week! So rest easy… the bean will soon be flowing at CD.
Yep, that’s it there… Fetco… High-end, Italian-made equipment… just like the kind they had in the Garden of Eden.
